I think I made my replacement out of all thread.

You can get nice finish on a bench grinder, by chucking your work in a cordless drill with some tape to to protect the clamped area.

Is the 52 lever a weak link? Would like to know for if I ever come upon one.

Number one thing, make sure the breech seal is still in and not too beat up.

When it's right, that rod has to bow slightly and cam over to keep the lever closed under tension. So it has to be the right length exactly, but also needs to be springy. If it's too stiff, it won't bend enough to stay closed. Look around and try to find an original if possible.

If you have to make one, a piece of spring steel would be best.

It's been a long time since I had one in front of me, and I don't have any measurements, sorry.

You might could email Hector and see if he has any dimensions for you, or know where you could order one. He posts here as well.
