I wanted to give you all plenty of time to get your teams together for the AAFTA National Rifle Field Target Championships.
Teams need at least 4 competitors, but, 5 is allowed and one shooters, lowest PCP score will be dropped.
One team member has to shoot a piston class, and their score cannot be dropped from the total.
Teams are normally formed from a single club, but that hasn't been the case in lots of other Nationals, and we will pass on that this time too. Sometimes Vendors will form a team, like Thomas has in the past. A team of Thomas's is tough to beat, but they have to have a piston shooter too this time... if Mike forms a team again.
So, teams can be from any state or club and any PCP class, but one shooter has to be a Piston class competitor.... Let's see what you can come up with:-)
Teams have to be submitted by Sept 1st, so I can figure out the awards and stuff.
You might have 6 or 7 people available for your team, and you can change competitors up to the day before the match... so you can be sure to make a team if someone can't make it.
Did I forget anything?
Wayne
Scott,
Yep, I expect to see a bidding war for the top piston shooters:-) Have you really secured your full team? 🙂 Better start buying some beers for Cameron K. Teams can be formed from different clubs or states:-)
Wayne
Well ... we could make Cameron the team captain then he would be buying some of us beers to be on his team ... like that idea a bit better.
It's all in fun ... only BB guns
Hey all,
What do you think about including a pistol score in the total? A team would have to have at least one member on the team that competes in the pistol event, and one score from the pistol match would be added to the 4 best rifle scores.
How does that sound to ya?
Wayne
well on our established TEAM 3 of the 5 will likely be shooting Pistol FT ..... So yea I'm in for that, tho not sure of that format tho being 1 score to drop off for a 4 person aggregate total.
If this becomes a prerequisite to making a team ..... Piston score Stays and Pistol should as well with the dropped score being one of the remaining 3
OR .... We bring the scored team at 5 with a 6th allowed tho low score to be eliminated. ( again keeping the Piston and Pistol score intact within the counted 5 )
The Team shooting rifles as established MUST HAVE 1 person minimum shooting the Pistol match as well IMO to qualify. ( Likely a non issue, but stating such anyways )
This sets up PISTOL as a wild card for teams in that 1 member of the team MUST be shooting pistol ... ANY of those within a team & shooting pistol can claim the high pistol score shot for team points.
More in a team that shoot pistol better the odds of getting the highest score to be used in final scoring. * this is if PISTON and PISTOL scores cannot be dropped.
I LIKE THAT !!!

Scott S,
I was proposing that 4 out of 5 of the rifle scores would count and one of the rifle shooters pistol score would be added to the 4 best rifle scores.
One of the 4 counting rifle scores has to still be a piston score. I'm pretty sure that's what JW was liking and what you would like as well.
So, confusingly, we all agree I believe:-)
Anyone else have ideas or comments?
Wayne
The rub might be for some teams... that the rifle shooter with the best pistol score, might not be in the top four rifle scores, so a team like SacValley with 3 pistol scores would have a better chance to get a high score for pistol added to their total.
So, Teams, get your rifles shooters to shoot pistol too:-)
Wayne
To be clearer maybe, I'm proposing that the pistol score that's counted has to be from one of the four counting rifle shooters.
If none of the top four rifle shooters have a pistol score, then no pistol score will be added to the total.
The team may choose a competitors rifle score who might be the lowest rifle score, but did have a pistol score if that makes their teams total better.
How's that?
Wayne
The AAFTA has Pistol competition as a legitimate Class X2 Pistol is hard ... damn hard. As is the Piston class's difficulty.
Rather than address the pistol as a "Side Show" as it often is viewed .....Incorporate it into the TEAM requirements and help all to see Field target at the National level is a multi dimensional sport and not just Rifle disciplines, but that of Pistols too !
If EITHER was easy you would have more folks shooting both ..... Wish to also garner a National Team championship win ? You had better be able to do BOTH.
IMO ...
Scott S
There ya go Scott,
That is the plan to set a model for future major events... FOR MORE involvement.... and grow all parts of the game.
Piston and pistols are also more affordable places to enter the game...
Also with a whole lot less competitors in those classes, one has a lot higher chance of finding a spot in the winners circle!
But, if no reason (or requirement in this case) to get involved in those classes, then no reason to try them.
I'm so glad I tried pistol many years ago. it took me the whole first year to even get to 50%, but then I found a good stable shooting position and it got a lot better. Getting to the top of pistol, I think is tougher than even getting into the upper rifle competitors in any class.
Pistol & Piston are about 1/4 or less of the participation of rifle at most major events if those classes are held at all.. that needs to change... I hope:-)
PS. we will be working hard to get some prizes in addition to the regular awards for Teams and all Class winners... so stay tuned!
Wayne
I'd like to post the teams that plan on competing, so get me your lists as soon as you can.
Remember, you can list up to 6, or even 7 shooters, that you will pick 5 from right before the match.

Rules again in one spot for your ease..
Rules for Teams at 2021 AAFTA National Field Target Championships
A team has to have at least one member on the team that competes in the pistol class, and one that competes in a Piston Class. One score from the pistol match would be added to the 4 best rifle scores.
One of the rifle scores has to be from the Piston Class. 4 out of 5 of the rifle scores would count and one of the 4 counting rifle shooters scores, pistol score would be added to the 4 best rifle scores. The pistol score must come from one of the 4 counting rifle competitors.
If none of the top four rifle shooters have a pistol score, then no pistol score will be added to the total.
The team may choose a competitors rifle score who might be the lowest rifle score, but did have a good pistol score if that makes their teams total better.
Teams can be from any state or club and any PCP class, but one shooter has to be a Piston class competitor
You might have 6 or 7 people available for your team, and you can change competitors up to the day before the match... so you can be sure to make a team if someone can't make it.
Again let me know your team members..
