Massachusetts Rifle Association - "America's Oldest Active Gun Club" had our first Field Target match of the year yesterday. It was about 5° in the morning and warmed up to 29° by noon. We had 4 hardcore FT shooters make it out for the match and had an awesome day despite the cold. The Sun was out keeping it a bit warmer, lol. We shot 17 lanes for a Total of 68 shots. The wind was gusting at about 10 - 15mph with occasional lulls. A good time was had by all.

So things started with John Eroh borrowing my gun, and forgot his bum bag and shot half the match with the gun loose in the stock. We finally figured out why he was missing dead low at 6 O'clock with great wind calls. So kudos to John for having shot as well as he did with so many rifle issues, it was definitely a challenging day.

A big Thanks to the guys for helping me dig string out of the icy snow and wrap it all up at the end. Once again the Flop Over targets performed perfectly.

@msawyer (Tip for You Matt) Leaving those strings out all year does no good for your cold line problems. No matter how good those Nock Over targets work if you leave them open to the environment all winter they will eventually give you problems. Just a 5 gallon bucket over them will help. Lube in the Spring will help sustain their performance.

In my experience, covering a target all winter leads to condensation and rust.  I make sure the face of the target is painted with a rust preventing paint and spray the action very liberally with RemOil.  The target is left in the down position all winter.  We have had Gamo targets out for over seven years that still function very well.  All of the rivets have been replaced with stainless nylock screws making it easy to adjust the target to take out too much side to side play.

At the end of our season, we wind the strings from the shooting line back to the target and hang them well above the target so they do not get stuck in snow or ice.  For the first match in the spring, we simply unwind the strings and reattach them to the posts at the shooting line.  Target actions are again sprayed with RemOil and we are good to go.

A five gallon plastic bucket gives our targets on our cinder blocks plenty of ventilation but keeps the rain and snow off from them. Our strings reside inside our shop all winter. Installed on the Targets in the spring with very few cold lines all year.

Having them on blocks with lots of ventilation would certainly do the trick, Bill.  I hate messing with strings though. If we get all our strings on winders that fit in a drill, I will do the same and put them away each year, labeled for each target.
