The Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association in Fairless Hills PA (Philadelphia suburb) will be holding our third Field Target match of the 2018 season on Sunday 09/16/18. The 10 lane course is laid out on the lakeside trails of the club’s 3D archery course. We’ve planned an interesting course by going back to a couple of seldom used lane locations plus we’ve picked new target sites for previously utilized lanes in keeping with our goal of making each match a unique event. There will be plenty of targets that even novice and new shooters should be able to take down along with challenging lanes and targets for the more experienced entrants. We certainly look forward to seeing all our regulars, urge them to bring a friend and invite anyone interested in Field Target to join us for some FT fun.
The full season match program with all details is pasted in below.

The Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association located in Southeastern PA held our third Field Target match of the 2018 season on Sunday, 9/16/2018. We welcomed total of 19 shooters from all around the greater Philadelphia metro area, upstate Pennsylvania, Maryland’s Eastern Shore and suburban Baltimore. Many of our regulars were present and accounted for plus it was a pleasure to welcome back some shooters who haven’t been able to join us in a bit like Travis Escue and John Tyler who even brought along a new shooter, Paul Todd.
The course of fire that awaited the entrants had the 30 targets for the 60-shot rifle match arranged in 10 lanes set out along the club’s lakeside 3D archery grounds. The rifle course was set to include a 40-shot pistol course within the rifle course using the 2 closest targets within each lane. Special Pistol Only targets were required in some lanes if the rifle targets were out of pistol range, i.e. beyond 35 yards. On the rifle course the average distance was 31.1 yards and the kill zones averaged 1.3 inches to yield a difficulty rating of 28.0 Troyer. There were 9 targets set out beyond 40 yards but 6 were under 20 yards. The pistol course had an average kill zone size of 1.2 inches and an average distance of 21.0 yards for a unweighted Troyer difficulty of 21.0 with the Pistol multiplier of 1.75 raising the difficulty to 36.75. In an unusual move for us this was the same course set up used for our July 2018 match. We decided to duplicate the lay-out because about half the entrants for the July match Did Not Finish due to the soaking rains. Our preference is to make each match different but in this case the difference was the unexpected sameness.
Even though some of the shooters had shot the same course previously there was no major uptick in performance. Brian Van Liew with a 55/60 score was once again first in the Open Division but his score only went up by 1 point over the July performance. In Hunter Division PCP / PISTON Combined Joel Gupta and John Tyler both finished with 55/60 scores, but Joel won the tiebreaker based on his superior off hand lane performance. Joel’s score went down a point relative to the July results while this was John’s first and only look at this layout. The takeaway from this is simple; good shooters shoot good scores. The WFTF Division PCP/ PISTON Combined was another close finish with Rich Bassett at 46/60 narrowly besting Mike Harris’s 45/60. Joel Gupta also finished atop the Pistol class where his 32/40 was 2 points better than Craig Evans 30/40. A full list of all the scores and gear will be pasted in at the end of this report
Thanks to the FTRPA archers for access to the lanes and all who took the time and spent the funds to come to the match. A special thanks to all those especially, Melissa Glenn who stayed around after the match, plus Ron Deal and Albert Rogers (they didn’t even shoot the match), who helped with the tear down and pack away of all the targets, strings and other match gear. Please try to join us for our next Field Target match Sunday, 11/18/2018.
