The Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association in Fairless Hills PA (Philadelphia suburb) will be holding our second Field Target match of the 2018 season on Sunday 07/15/18. For shooters planning to go to the Crosman All American Field Target Championship this will be the last opportunity for some competition trigger time prior to that match. The 10 lane course is laid out on the lakeside trails of the club’s 3D archery course. We’ve planned an interesting course by going back to a couple of seldom used lane locations plus we’ve picked new target sites for previously utilized lanes in keeping with our goal of making each match a unique event. There will be plenty of targets that even novice and new shooters should be able to take down along with challenging lanes and targets for the more experienced entrants. We certainly look forward to seeing all our regulars, urge them to bring a friend and invite anyone interested in Field Target to join us for some FT fun.
The full season match program with all details is pasted in below.

Match Report Falls Twp. Rifle and Pistol Assn. in SE PA 7/15/18
The Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association located in Southeastern PA held our second Field Target match of the 2018 season on Sunday, 7/15/2018. We were pleased to play host to 25 airgunners from locations both nearby and far away. There were attendees (some regulars some new ones too) from nearby New Jersey and Delaware but also some from the Maryland Eastern Shore and metro Baltimore. A few more shooters came from upstate New York and far out on Long Island and even included some Connecticut yankees. The return to our more classic and historically average attendance numbers was nice to see in view of the decrease we saw for the May match.
The course of fire that awaited the entrants had the 30 targets for the 60-shot rifle match arranged in 10 lanes set out along the club’s lakeside 3D archery grounds. The rifle course was set to include a 40-shot pistol course within the rifle course using the 2 closest targets within each lane. Special Pistol Only targets were required in some lanes if the rifle targets were out of pistol range, i.e. beyond 35 yards. On the rifle course the average distance was 31.1 yards and the kill zones averaged 1.3 inches to yield a difficulty rating of 28.0 Troyer. There were 9 targets set out beyond 40 yards but 6 were under 20 yards. The pistol course had an average kill zone size of 1.2 inches and an average distance of 21.0 yards for a unweighted Troyer difficulty of 21.0 with the Pistol multiplier of 1.75 raising the difficulty to 36.75.
The weather in the days leading up to match day had been typical for July here in the Philadelphia area, hot and muggy and that is what the weatherman told us to expect for Sunday the 15th along with the potential for pop up thundershowers that should have been out of the picture by the time the sight in range was ready to open at 8:00 am. For the most part that forecast held true until most shooters were on their second lane when the skies grew dark and rumbles of thunder could be heard in the distance. By their third lane shooters were feeling the first drops filter through the forest canopy and steady rain was falling all along the lanes shortly thereafter. Once it became obvious that the precipitation wasn’t going to cease anytime soon about half the competitors decided that despite what their parents might have told them while growing up, they did indeed have enough sense to come in out of the rain. For some it was a lack of proper rain gear, for others the desire to not abuse their gear was paramount and for some the decision to take a Did Not Finish (DNF) was simply that the day had ceased to be fun.
Meanwhile, the diehards who persevered posted some impressive scores especially in view of the conditions. Vasyl Povoroznyk in his first match here at FTRPA carded a 55/60 to narrowly defeat his Connecticut compatriot Leo Gonzales’ (53/60) and Tom Holland’s 50/60 in the WFTF Division Please also note that Leo’s score was shot with a 12 foot pound spring powered rifle, casting some doubt on the idea (myth?) that spring guns can’t shoot with pre-charged guns. The always dangerous Brian Van Liew, with a 54/60 score, also had a 2-point margin of victory over Gary LaRocca. Joel Gupta posted the match high score of 56/60 for first in the Hunter division with Kevin Kunkle finishing second with a 51/60. Joel was a double winner also taking first in Pistol with a 35/40 score. A full listing of all the equipment and score will be pasted in at the end of the report.
Thanks to the FTRPA archers for access to the lanes and all who took the time and spent the funds to come to the match. Mother nature was not supportive in this instance, but we’ll hope for better next time. A special thanks to all those especially Melissa Glenn who stayed around after the match, when the rain stopped, and the sun finally returned, to help with the tear down and pack away of all the targets, strings and other match gear. Please try to join us for our next Field Target match Sunday, 9/16/2018.
