BCSA (Binghamton, NY) - October 11th, 2025 Match Report

Broome County Sportsmens Association (BCSA) Field Target Match Report

That’s all folks! The 2025 season at BCSA has come to an end! The weather for the day was cool and breezy! Temperatures ranged from the low 40’s to the low 60’s. The wind ranged from 3-5mph at the start to 10-12mph at the end of the match. As noticed and discussed by pretty much all the competitors, there was a swirl going on. Wind was going multiple directions from the shooting box to the target….made for a tricky day!

We had 17 people on hand for this match which was a 60 shot rifle match followed by a 44 shot High Power Field Target match. Jerry LaRocca drove up from Virginia to return to our range after a few year hiatus. It’s great seeing him back and believe he had a fantastic time! We had some treats again too….Karen Reis brought along some peanut butter cookies for everyone to enjoy……Thanks Karen!

Sight-in:

The course of fire for the rifle match was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane, 2 shots per target, with the shooting order being left, middle, right. There was also the usual 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. Due to it being the end of the season with all the Grand Prix matches behind us, we set things up a tiny bit easier….but added a twist. The stats for the 60 shot course are as follows:

The breakdown for the percentage of targets based on difficulty was:

As seen in the pictures above, a few of us changed Divisions for this match. Karen and Stephan shot in Open while I pulled out one of the EV2’s and went WFTF. Brian Wagner and Rick Vaeth coming off their wins at the Nationals mixed things up a bit too. Brian set aside the LGU and got behind his RAW TM1000. Rick opted for his FX Crown over his Steyr. The final pic is of Jerry back at it behind one of His RAW’s. The wind was tricky and the skies were bright for the rifle portion of the day. As usual, there were targets in light unprotected areas and targets in dark protected areas along with everything in between! Including a resurrected target obstruction that hasn’t seen the light of day since 2009! This came back out due to a discussion with Trevor Davies during one of our hangout nights at the Nationals. The talk of prone was brought up. I said you can set a lane that forces the target to be shot prone…unless your Karen & Nathan that can get ultra-low or Chuck who discovered the weakness of some of the taller targets. Out from the weeds came the halfpipe! The target is placed so that you can’t shoot it standing or sitting….so prone or deadman it is. Pics…

Brian VanLiew was able to lock in high score for the day with a 49 out of 60 in Open PCP. The second highest score for the day was a 45 out of 60 from Doug Rogers in Hunter PCP. The rest of the pack followed behind and all the scores can be seen below.

Two quick cold lines were called. One due to the Egret target not falling correctly because of it’s size…a quick shim and all was well and the other call was to remove a dead swinging branch.

After the conclusion of the rifle match, while the scores were tallied, everyone jumped in and helped pick up and pack away the rifle targets and pull the strings for the High Power targets. As always, Thank You All, the help is greatly appreciated!

High Power Field Target Time!

The course of fire was 6 lanes. 5 Lanes having 4 targets per lane and the 6th lane, being a standing lane, had 2 targets. The course stats were as follows.

9 people participated this time around. Louis dropped out due to equipment issues and Bill was just plinking for fun. Besides the standard targets, we also had swinger targets set at 125 yds, 150 yds and 165 yds. A few people took the extra shots and stretched out their rigs.

Brian Wagner took first with a 34/44 followed by his next closest competitor Nathan Thomas with a 28/44. Chuck was right on Nathan’s heels with a 27/44. The rest of the pack fell in line behind the leaders. This was Jerry’s first HP-FT match and he had a blast knocking down the long range targets with his RAW HM1000X! I think he much prefers the 0.30 over the 0.177 :) !

After the match was completed, everyone jumped in and we made quick work of packing away all the targets! As always, all the help is GREATLY GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you to all that attended throughout the year! We greatly appreciate you taking the time to spend the day with us at BCSA! We hope to see you and many more new faces in 2026!!
