Just got a nice hair perm and don't want to ruin it...  

I shot in the NC hurricane Nationals match, Oregon ain't got nothing like that this time of year.  

When you need glasses shooting in the rain is a huge pita on several levels.  It's not like we need to focus on the target for any real reason...

I expect you'll be shooting your springer in the pouring rain then?

I have been informed that every lane has a raised 5' square wood shooter's platform...  

Hot cocoa and coffee will be served by Wayne and Randy with back rubs and foot massages at every standing and kneeling lane!

Yes Folks, the weather is shaping up nicely... they have been predicting showers for the last few days and we did get like a heavy fog for periods of time and drizzell last night.  There has been more cloudy with sun break thru than light rain, and today the wind has been blowing harder than predicted, so that tells me the high pressure is winning out and we'll see less rain and clouds than predicted. 

But, even if we have to delay or take a break we'll have plenty of time to get the match done in dry weather.

So, come on down ya'll

Can't even begin to imagine how much work that was to start almost from scratch again on that hill!

Day one was nuts, day two was tough but at least it was closer to known wind holdovers...  Platforms were dynamite although I did miss being able to get the front foot up or down for the elevation gains.  But now I know which angle I need to improve on now. 😉  String placement was difficult but I am not sure where else it would work better.  

I think the yellow course offhand was too easy...I mean I hit all four and that is not supposed to happen...

I liked that you needed to change position from the first to second target on many of the lanes, it mixed up the wind and made it so you had to be as efficient as possible with your time if you wanted to wait the wind out at all.  Targets were situated so you had to look for wind shadows in order to hit the kz, this broke up the wind reading between targets on the same lane, compounding the difference in distances.  A few shots I had less wind holdover at longer distances compared to the previous target.

The target distance from lane to lane appeared more varied on the blue course than the yellow course.  Day one (yellow) there were a bunch of lanes where I shot at zero clicks).  Maybe my zero is unusually long (which it is) but I have also experienced this phenomenon at other matches.  I will try to be mindful of this when planning the Nevada course.

Is stacking a 10 and 55 yard target on the same lane now passe??  Or ending on a 10 yard target to find a 55 as the first target on the next lane... Those were the ones where you forget to back out the over rotation and end inevitably up missing the first shot and often the second.

The weather held, well except for the pistol match (which I did not shoot) and was dynamic and beautiful to watch play across the mountains beyond.  What a view!!

Thanks again for an epic event, my first time at The Hill was a good one!

Oh yeah, almost forgot.

The three jet formation fly over was a bit tardy (halfway through the match on Sunday), you may not want to write out that check after all... ? 

Wow, did we get lucky with the weather, while Saturday was pretty miserable with wind and cold, we stayed dry. Sunday was actually a very nice day, cold but only moderate winds and no rain. Based upon my comments you can tell I didn't shoot the pistol match because those brave souls had to deal with cold,  15-20mph winds and some rain. But it could have been much worse if we got the rain that was predicted, somebody up there likes us.

What an amazing course, I cannot remember a single shot in two days that I would have considered level, and some of the uphill shots were at ridiculous angles. You went from shooting downhill in an open field with full+ wind effect to shooting uphill in a wooded area where you were looking into the sun or the targets were tucked away in dark shaded coves. What a fun challenge, my hat's off to the people who designed the course and spent the incredible amount of time to set it up. The shooting platforms are amazing and I don't know how you could shoot the course without them.  Thank you Randy, Chris, Jacob and Wayne. I know the course is still a work in process and we look forward to seeing it progress as the years go by.

Congratulations to the class winners that was some incredible shooting, JimW's score of was amazing, particularly Saturday when the winds ate everyone's lunch. I am also totally in awe of the WFTF shooters, I cannot imagine shooting on Saturday with a 12ft lb rifle. 

On to Nevada next month, where we will shoot one of the most unique courses we have out West, the match certainly lives up to it's catch phrase "Are you tough enough!"  Hope to see many of you there.

this was the most challenging course I have ever shot.  Over the past year, I've tapered off on field target for bench rest, but this match reminded me why I love FT.  The match was well-organized and the course was comfortable with the wood shooters platforms. The shooters were a great, friendly (if competitive) group.  But then you add in the wind, the unrelenting up and down hill shots and on saturday the high winds and rain, and you have FT heaven.  Randy, Jason, Darren, Chris M, and of course, Wayne all put in heroic effort to make the course what it was.  For you east coasters, its worth the trip to the west coast to test your skills here.  You will probably discover that you are not as good as you thought.  I know I did.

I know you are all waiting for the match report... but Randy is recovering.  He'll get with me today, I hope... and we'll get the match report done.  Thanks for the nice comments... AND thanks for making the journey to Ashland.  This IS a course that will challenge the best of us.  If you want to come and practice your wind reading and up and downhill shots, then schedule a week to come on down...  across ... or up as the case may be:-)

Match Report Humility Hill May 19th and 20th 2019

Our match director, Randy Ebersole, asked me to write the match report for him.

The weather outside was” fright-full”… who cares about inside (it felt like Christmas anyway) … We worried about the predicted rainfall, but escaped the drops until the later part of the day during the pistol match. But the wind, (8 to 24mph), would not listen to our prayers… and kept gaining in power as the day moved on…. It gusted to the low 30s at times with horizontal rain during the pistol match.  Not only was the wind furious, it was switching directions and not steady for very many seconds at a time…. Not our normal conditions for the middle of May in Southern Oregon.  It was great to have the wood decks on every lane to shoot from, keeping us high above any mud and dry and level.

We ended up shooting two shots per target, since the wind was so bad.  It was 52 shots on 13 lanes each day on the blue and yellow courses. The high rifle score over both days only reached 84%, and was shot by Jim Whittlesey in Open Class. Saturday’s course had an average distance of 40.5 yards, a 1.43 kill zone and was 35.9T (Avg DF NoEnv), 42.96 (Avg DF All), (just under the legal limit), with 16 of the 26 targets past 40 yds and a standard deviation of 6.06.  On Sunday, the course had an average distance of 38.27 yards, a 1.3” kill zone and was 33.09T (Avg DF NoEnv), 40.47 (Avg DF All), with 13 of the 26 targets past 40 yds and a standard deviation of 8.03

We had 17 competitors that shot on both days. Larry Durham, Jim Zigler, John Knapp, and Scott Hull came up from Southern CA.  Riz and his son Vincent Marquez, Jessica and Cameron Kerndt, Jim Cyran, Chris Merritt, Jim Whittlesey, Darren Taylor, and Dana Wyse (his gun fell over and bent his scope on Saturday, so didn’t shoot on Sunday), all journeyed from Northern CA… joining us locals, Bob Kidd (Bob moved to La Pine a couple hours NE of Ashland.. Welcome BoB!), Chris Lovitt, Randy Ebersole, Jacob Sumner and I. 

The pistol match was contested Saturday afternoon after the rifle match, by eleven shooters; 5 in the Unlimited, and 6 in Hunter class.  High score was shot by Cameron Kerndt (36/40) in Un-limited class, with Riz and Scott H. close behind with a 35/40.  Randy E. won Hunter Class with a 33/40, I was 2^nd with 29/40 and Jacob, LD, and Vincent only a point or two behind, on the 33.44 (Avg DF NoEnv), 41.04 (Avg DF All) troyer pistol course.  LD created a new USFT pistol and he graciously allowed me to share it in the pistol match, he also switched scopes and air tanks with a higher reg. pressure, making it a 15fpe carbine rifle and also used it to compete in the rifle Hunter PCP class.

The switching and extreme wind conditions hurt the scores.  Saturday’s high score was shot by JW, in Open Class 43/52, with Riz in WFTF PCP only a point behind, and Randy two behind Riz.  The scores were tight in Hunter PCP.  John Knapp was in the lead with a 34/52… with, only 6 points separating the five contestants, and two points the top four in Hunter PCP.  The high Piston score was shot in WFTF, by Cameron K., with a 33/52… matching the second high score in Hunter PCP!

Sunday saw a much needed break in the weather, with patchy SUNNY skies and very light winds, (to start the day at least).  Everyone’s spirit was high at the prospects of great shooting conditions.  But, the lighter winds were still difficult to read, even with the easier course and lighter winds, the high score of the day was still only a 44/52…. But it was shot by three competitors; JW, Scott Hull, and our very own Chris Lovitt.  That good score on Sunday, bumped Chris to 1^st in Hunter PCP with a 76/104, but only by one point, with LD and Jim C. tied for 2^nd with a final score of 75/104.  Scott’s high score on Sunday, was not enough to make up for Saturday in Open Class, and JW’s 87/104 was the high overall score and a solid first in Open PCP, giving Scott, a solid 2^nd with 78/104 and Chris M. 3^rd with 67/104.  WFTF PCP was won by Riz with 82/104, and Randy close behind in 2^nd with 80/104 and me lagging with a 77/104.  Cameron shot a super piston score on Sunday of 37/52 to run away with WFTF Piston Class, with Jacob S. also shooting super piston on Sunday only a point behind with a 36/52 to take a combined piston 2^nd place.  Western Free Style Class didn’t have any easier time with the conditions and the courses, and Jim Zigler won the class with a 62/104 and Darren Taylor took 2^nd with a 41/104.

The skies were turning darker as we finished up a great meal provided by my sister Laurie and her friend Kathy, but we got the awards given out and the competitors on their way home before any wetness spoiled a great grand prix match and day of shooting.
