I recently purchased an HW55 MM that had stock damage.  I had the rifle refinished, the internals modernized and added an accessories rail.

Personally,  I think it came out great.   I think that I saved that old girl from the scrap heap.

Some might say I destroyed the rifle.  What do you guys think about it?

Anytime you rescue and save a quality German rifle, that's a very good thing. Thums up Kingfisher

Thanks Sham!  Here's another old German HyScore 810M that was resurrected.  Thing shoots like a dream now!

I think improving on the old (especially when it comes to the internals) is just that: an improvement!  I like keeping the overall spirit  intact, so I might not put a thumbhole stock on an FWB 124 or something like that, but think your HW55 is great!

Love that cheek piece!!  Once again nice work!!  I would love to find an old FWB 300 or Diana 75 and resto mod it!  Love the old target rifle stocks, I shoot PCP rifles but have a ' hanker in ' to play with a good old springer!!  Keep up the good work!  J.L.

Personally, I would prefer older guns to retain their original configuration.

I’m a fairly anal collector, and like to leave old airguns as original as possible.

BUT—if the gun is damaged when you get it, that changes the game entirely. What you’ve done with that 55 is great!

From an aesthetic standpoint, it’s kind of a shame that the big patch of checkering under the fore end was lost, but again I understand that was the area where it was damaged when you got it. The accessory rail was a good save, and a ton of fun to use as well.

I agree completely.  Personally,  I would never alter a rifle which was in collectable condition.  All the ones I did were rescues.  I have many untouched originals and love them that way.

However,  some guys just like things their way!  I'm not opposed to that either.  That' the beauty of this sport.  There' room for everyone!
