I know it comes with a 4x scope and a quieting device used as a cocking aid.

Noticed it is pretty expensive compared to the standard HW50s (especially when price searching at Krale).

Is this model quieter than an R7 or HW30s? Scope any good?

I have a tuned R7 and tuned R9 and wonder if it would be worthwhile to purchase the HW50s Hunter edition in 177 since I have the other models above and below.

I really like the R7 due to its ease of cocking and quiet report.

I have never owned nor shot an HW50s before.

TIA

Yea the moderator alone is $100.  Not worth the price in what you get.  I talked to a guy who had one on a HW97K.  He said it may help a little but hardly any noticeable difference.  I would just stick with the HW50S from AOA for $316.99 and you should be happy.

The hw50 from Krale is the best deal going in my view, and by a wide margin.

The moderator will not make the gun sound quieter to the shooter but downrange it will probably be noticeably quieter.

I have 2 HW30's: one with a muzzle brake and the other - the laminate "urban pro" with the Weihrauch moderator. The 30 is not loud to begin with, but there is quite a noticeable difference in the report between the 2. Both have Vortek kits and the report is substantially subdued, both when shooting it or being several feet away when someone else does. A neighbor would have no clue you were shooting unless they hear pellets striking the target! I can cock this gun with one finger as the moderator greatly increases the leverage.  I am having so much fun with the gun and the moderator has no effect on accuracy. One ragged hole at 27 yards with a 4x32.  By the way: many people complain about the cocking effort of the 50. The moderator would eliminate that.

Thanks for the input guys, I was a bit worried about the cocking effort which prevented me from purchasing one in the past. I was told that the R9 which has more power but is easier to cock than the HW50s but it does make sense regarding the added leverage with the LDC attached.

Does anyone know if it is threaded on, grubscrewed, or permanently locktited?

It's threaded Hotair. Unscrews easily when you want to clean the barrel.  I say get the 50! Forgot to mention that I have one in 22 and it's a gem. Had Rob Hawkins tune it right out of the box!  Every bit as accurate as my two 30's, but with significantly more punch.  If I could only keep one springer, I'm pretty sure it would be the 22 50S. I actually sold my beautiful "thumbhole 22 Evolution" because the 50 was more accurate. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info, it is good to know it is threaded to make barrel cleaning easier.

Selling an Evolution (thumhole no less!) and keeping he HW50s is surely saying a lot!

Is it possible to have the barrel threaded on a regular 50S without damage to the crown and/or accuracy? If so, where could one have it done?

I have seen it done on YouTube, but not sure if it affects the crown in any way. The other option is to try an adapter like the ones available from DonnyFL, they slip on and secure with two grub screws. That will allow you to add an LDC of choice. The Tanto is about perfect for a springer, and looks great to boot.

I put a Vortek PG2 kit in mine. Buttoned the piston Took the sights off and added a straight shooters MB and that helped the cocking. The thing with the cocking on my HW50 is the lockup is so tight it helps to slap it. Oh yeah you also have to do the rubbing block ( delrin)on the cocking linkage and on my gun I shortened the front stock screw so it did not rub on the backside of the cocking linkage.  The HW50 I have has a really good barrel. Really likes CP 7.9. too bad yopu can't get the really good old timey CP anymore. Tune wise its a lot like an R7. Needs work.

If yours liked the Crosman 7.9gr cpls then it just may like the 7.4gr pointeds.

They come in the 1250ct milk cartons as well as 250ct and 500ct tins(coded "Canada") according to Crosman's website.

HA. I have been eyeing this model for some time now and have asked some of the same questions.

I bought the same package, but on an HW30. It comes with the same scope. If you like the magnification and a simple reticle, it’s one of the nicest glass I have looked through. I “upgraded” mine to more magnification, and kinda regretting it.

I have been reluctant to buy it because 1. Not sure I really need it, 2. Budgeting for other guns 3. Every time I ask or read on it, it’s about 50/50 with folk complaining about cocking it, or rubbing mechanism, etc. I personally love the moderator on my Urban HW30, only wish they didn’t bond it to the barrel like that.

I may end up buying one and find out for myself at some point.

There is no galling/rubbing on the current production HW50S. The factory has been installing a plastic insert in the cocking lever for the last 5 or 6 years to prevent it from making contact with the receiver tube and galling. I've had my HW50S for about 4 years and no issues with it.

Unfortunately, the last I knew, that's not the case with the HW30S which can still experience the galling/rubbing. I put one of the inserts from ARH in the cocking lever of my 30S and have had no problem since, but it did rub out of the box.

BTW, those Weihrauch scopes look identical to the BSA Essential scopes. They're probably made in the same factory. I have a 2-7x32 BSA Essential on my 30S and I think it's a great match for it. It has decent glass for the price and a nice thin duplex reticle. But I really like my 50S and it's accurate enough that it deserved a better scope so I put a 3-9x40 Nikon EFR on it.

The moderator is threaded on, not bonded.  Initial removal requires a firm counterclockwise twist as locktite or something similar has been applied. Screws off quite easily after that. Cleaned the compound off when tuning and barrel cleaning and the moderator has remained fully engaged after a few thousand shots. The barrel is quite short, shorter than the carbine r7 that was offered several years ago. Agree that the scope is quite good and the moderator really grows on you. When you first see the gun, it appears rather long, but that impression quickly fades after experiencing the silent report and feather like cocking effort. The laminate stock is beautiful as well. Love the thing!

I will give it a go, but mine only loosened and came off the base. The base stayed firmly attached to the barrel.

I just got this one and the LDC seems to be bonded onto the barrel but it screws off from the mid section to allow for barrel cleaning. If it is threaded then it must be locktited on.

I need to break this one in. First impression I like it, it is slightly heavier than my R7.

Cocking is significantly more than my R7 which is almost effortless but not as hard as my R9.

It is a little louder than my R7 but significantly quieter than my R9.

The 4x AO scopes focuses down to less than 7.5 yards. It is surprising clear for a MADE IN CHINA scope with WEIHRAUCH labeled onto it. So far, this scope seems to be the best scope I have seen packaged as a bundle.

Will do a review after it gets broken in.

Sorry for the crude pic. Was shooting my 12fpe tuned TX200 as a comparison.

Very nice, congrats! Hope to see some groups and hear your thoughts on it after a little while. Bought 2nd hand or new from AoA?

Actually matter of fact BOTH. And I can tell it is not even broken in yet. My savings unfortuneately wasn't that much though unless you consider a Crosman 2250 throw in as a discount LOL!

I also managed to snag another LGV Comp Ultra in 177 which did not appear to come with factory sights and will report on that when it arrives. Appears different than the one I have. The Walther LGVs is another story. Can't have too much of them!

I can tell you that if I had gotten this gun (HW50s HUNTER) before any of my R9s, I wouldn't have bought any of those and just be content with this one.

It does look promising with a variety of pellets so far.

I am tempted to try a different scope to try and get the most accuracy out of it.

HA.

Congrats on the 50S, HA.

My 50S (standard version) isn't very pellet picky, either. But it loves the 7.87 AA Express.

Not long after I got mine I put a 2-7x32 BSA Essential on it. It's a decent scope with good glass for it's price and I really like the 2-7x zoom range, but it didn't take long to realize that the 50S deserved better glass. It now wears a 1st gen Nikon EFR 3-9x40 and it makes a great combo.

Lol, funny that you mention passing up the R9 if you had had the 50S first. I did have my 50S first and still got an R9. Don't regret getting the R9 at all but it hasn't replaced the 50S as my favorite. That will take some doing!

Congrats again and enjoy that 50S!

I have to say that if I were an open sight rifle shooter I probably would have gone for a cheaper HW50s but now that I have this one, I noticed the cleaner look without the sights or sight mounting holes when you take the sights off. I kind of like it. I am tempted to get the HW30s version of this...

Even though I use a scope I like having the option of being able to use open sights if wanted. But I'm not too fond of the empty holes, either. Someone on the old Yellow suggested using screw covers to hide them so I got some to try. They're for a #2 Philips screw and the nub is too small for the HW sight screw holes so I had to use a tiny dab of silicone to "glue" them in. I just plugged the front hole where the alignment pin goes with some silicone. I have the covers on my 30S and 50S and will eventually put them on my R9 and HW35K, too. Also have them on a couple of Diana break barrels (BTW, the #2 Philips screw covers are a screw-in fit on the Diana break barrels). Here's how they look on my HW30S.

IMG 2951 1

And the nice thing is they're very low profile and the outer edge is thin enough that there's no problem with snagging them when wiping down the gun.

I have the HW30s Urban Pro in Salt/Pepper Laminate. Get it, you will not regret it. Pest birds at 30 yards are no problem. Chipmunk headshots at 20 yards guaranteed!

That looks great Jim. I still prefer the no iron sight version, but that is a great fix if needed.

That's a nice looking 30S. I'm not generally a fan of laminate stocks but I like the looks of that one.
