#1 bone head blunder..........
I attended the THAGC field target match yesterday at Mt Pleasant, NC to shoot "piston hunter class". At the sight-in range all seemed to be set up ok but the "wheels fell off the cart" after shooting the first few lanes. My home tuned HW95 with a home turned oring sealed piston cap replacing the factory "rubber one". My normally "excess noise free" breakbarrel started making a "low snapping noise" with each shot which became more noticeable with each lane and the point of impact seemed to be erratic on occasion. The noise became especially noticeable half way through the match so I opted to skip the remainder of the match just incase I was having some "internal mechanical issues" that might become major damage.
After arriving home from the match, disassembling the HW95 for inspection I noticed that the rear Weaver style scope ring mount clamp was tightened skewed a bit on the Picatinny adapter and the rear ring was loose causing a "slapping sound". There were no internal issues to the HW95 so I replaced the oring in my homemade piston cap with a new oring and reassembled the gun. Shooting a of pellets into my pellet trap I noticed that the "snapping noise" was gone after reinstalling my "4-16x44 Hawke AirMax 30 SF Compact" (verifying that the scope ring clamps were properly aligned and tightened). A few shots at an 18 yard target upstairs showed that accuracy and "proper functioning" were restored.
#2 bone head blunder from a few years ago but discovered on Saturday..........
My Vantage is lighter than the side focus AirMax so I decided to use the Vantage for a while removing it from it's storage box. The scope still had the Weaver Quad Lock scope rings attached and found that after mounting it to the Picatinny rail that the scope tube wasn't parallel with the receiver. I noticed that when I was using the Vantage a few years ago front Weaver QuadLock ring was "medium height" but the other ring was a "low height" QuadLock!
Well......I'm going to replace the medium QuadLock ring with the appropriate low QuadLock (still in my parts bin). Hoping that the differences in height didn't "bend the tube" the "medium height" ring was removed and there is no visible sign the scope tube was undamaged..........
Anywhoo........I'm contemplating the possibility of using the Vantage on the HW95 instead of the side focus AirMax even though the "Hawke tech guy" suggested that the Vantage wasn't recommended for springers over 12fpe. Since Compact side focus Hawke AirMax" reticle illumination knob" is Very Stiff Turning plus the compact Airmax is a bit of hassle to fit between scope rings unless the rings are very narrow like these..........
The Airmax does have a 16x max magnification however I've been using it set at 12x to "brighten the image a bit", especially since the reticle lighting knob is "un-adjustable" by hand.
