Looking for a SHORT and POWERFUL Pistol – Any Ideas and Mods?

I’ve been looking at pellet pistols lately, and all the models I looked at fail at TWO of the main requirements.

(1)  SHORT, as in 10" (25cm) plus/minus.

(2)  POWERFUL, as in 6-7FPE muzzle energy (600fps with 7.87 or 8.4gr pellets, 700fps with 5.52gr).

(3)  QUIET, as in the PyramydAir loudness rating of 2-Low-to-Medium (Marauder quiet).
The last requirement probably will require a mod, like a 3D-printed large-volume moderator, Leshiy-offset.

So, what do you suggest?

What about CO2 pistols – Can they be upped in power?

Thanks for your ideas!   ;D

Crosman 1701 Silhouette with a 1720 transfer port.  It is 14 1/2 inches long. Does have a bit more bark with the larger TP. I still back yard shoot it without any guilt.

Compared to the Prod sized 1720.

1702 d

1702 e

Crosman 150/157 fits #1 and with mods #2. I have a 150 and with an icemaker tubing xfr port and light valve mods it makes 475 fps with 14.5 grain premiers. Its loud and has a tad of muzzle flip. Crosman Mark 1 or II about the same characteristics and not as loud. Could run it on HPA with a hangy tank.

If you can afford it, get an Ataman.  I don't own one but I shot one at the PA cup.  I fell in love with it.  Nice trigger and very accurate.

Webley Alecto--Zoraki HP-01   in the ultra

https://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2010/11/webley-alecto-part-4/

you can fit a 1/2-20 adapter, they make a shoulder stock, great trigger, nice grips, good sights

might be an idea, no co2, no air, just some strength to get that third and forth, grunt pump

That new A+A Cardinal PCP/CO2 duel fuel pistol from Russia looks interesting. Slightly over your length limitation at 278mm / 11" though. and only in .22 and .25.

The Beeman P1 (aka HW 45) spring-piston pistol is not too far off that power level. It’s 10 1/2” long and will beat any CO2 or PCP gun in the quietness department.

All without the need for moderators, regulators, cartridges, pumps, tanks, gauges, and etc. ?

I forgot about that one, I put a Crosman stock on mine.

I’ve seen quite a few posts on the Artemis PP700 pistol, seems to be a well built and easy to work on platform. There’s also the old stand by the Crosman MKI that Bill had mentioned. Mac1 still works on them and has parts to mod them. If your partient you can get a MKI/II for under $100 on eBay or one of the gun auction sites.

While not quite your criteria and more of an investment  if you can find an old Falcon FN8, FN10 or one of the Brocock pistols they can be tuned down and are pretty easy to work on. I’ve got an FN10 in .22 that does 16fpe. I’ve seen them up to 20fpe  and tuned all the way down to indoor for shooting

The PP700 is impressive for price break, accuracy and a little trigger work goes a long way. In my opinion it needs moderation. FX Ranchro is the same way. Just a bit long for the OP's check list and add needed moderation and it's getting long in the legs. But, a accurate power shooter.

I am hard of hearing but it wasn't that loud to me even with hearing aids on.  If you have good ears it may be a little loud.  I was really impressed by the overall shooting experience.  My good friend was down in his back and didn't shoot the FT match and he went back to the booth and shot the Ataman for an hour or more.  He wants one too.  He is a good pistol shot and was hitting small targets at 25 yards easily off hand.  It felt like a very good quality piece to me and the trigger is very good.  Good luck.

The Ataman AP16 compact will hit 12fpe easily. It's very loud, and extremely accurate. I clipped the hammer spring on mine and now I can dial it down to around 6fpe and it's much quieter and shot count increased a good bit. With the hammer spring stock, you can't turn it down much at all.  It's a breeze to work on too, that's a plus.

I made an adapter for mine to accept a standard UNF 1/2-20 mod and it's very quiet at 7fpe with a short moderator. That's where I leave mine set.

**Be advised that the factory thread on the AP16 is a female 13mm. A 1/2-20 will somewhat fit but it's halfassed and will cause clipping because it wont tighten up concentric. In other words, you'll need an adapter. I believe DonnyFL makes one now, even after he said he wouldn't make them when i asked about it at the time.

Great pistols, very accurate and the trigger is a fairly nice single stage. If you remove the safety you can get it set to zero creep.

I made a post here somewhere a long while back with pics but I can't find it. Here's a random one I dug up on my computer. I think is where I was dickin around with the hammer spring.

Hi Linbshaker, looks like you have had your Ataman for a couple years now.  Any problems yet?

No problems yet! It's a really solid little gun. I don't shoot it a whole lot, but now that I have a better red dot on it I may take it squirrel hunting here soon. That should be a challenge!

@pluric

pluric,

I bought a transfer port for my 1720 that gives 12 ft/lbs. Could that same TP be put in the 1701?

Yes.. the larger transfer port can go into a 1701.

Shorter (10.1")barrel willnot quite make the energy (with the same tune) of a 12", the smaller air volume in the cylinder won't come close to the shot count, and the 1701 is "bare barreled" and rather loud at 10-12 foot pounds....but it's still way-longer than the 10"  on the first post's "wish list".

Adding a shroud extends the length a little more (maybe 1 1/2"-1 3/4" longer than the end of the barrel)...adding an LDC would be detachable, but when on might extend the length another 4-5".

A little size comparison (of the short ones....at least short enough that they can be shot one-handed):

@Donc

The tp I put in my 1701 was out of a 1720. I'd ordered it from Crosman. So you must have found a larger than stock 1720 tp. I just put it back to stock after getting a 1720T. It's quieter and higher shot count set up as stock.

@marflow I also would strongly recommend the Zoraki HP-01 ,or Webley & Scott Alecto , both are  made in Istanbul by Atak Arms Ltd. If you ever had an Desert Eagle 50 cal. in your hand, the feeling is almost the same 😉 Massive , solid, excellent quality and boringly good accuracy . Also there are zillions of options for mods and tuning . I have two of these : The light and the Ultra ( I call it Ultron 😉 )what I did with my short one : As I am in a wheel chair and to walk miles to the targets and back or so , I've settled three aiming options . The laser sight for shooting at 15 yards ; the red dot unit for shooting targets at 25 yards , and a scope 3-9 x 40 for shooting at range of 35 + yards . That way I have ready settled three distances, and don't need to make corrections of any of these fixed on my "bully" . It is ove 5 lbs now so what ?! 😉

The Artemis PP750 is my recommendation. It is compact, quiet, powerful and extremely accurate. With simple adjustments you can achieve 16 FPE in .22 cal. Although I’m using a DonnyFl Ronin it is quiet without it. I have owned three different Ataman AP16 pistols and ended up returning all three. The Artemis PP750 was only $300 compared to the Ataman’s $1,000 and in my honest opinion, the PP750 is a far superior gun both in reliability and accuracy. I’m getting 1 inch groups at 50 yards and have shot it accurately out to 80 yards.

The next pistol I would recommend is the Artemis PP700SA also in .22 caliber. Both of these pistols are extremely accurate, quiet and powerful.

For the money, it's hard to beat the Artemis 700. Easy to work on, excellent accuracy and power.
