Out of the box... beautiful, the blueing isn't as deep as a Beeman but, it's nice. The stock is darker than I saw in stock internet photos, I like it. The checkering is nice, not as overstated as it looks and has a good feel. Yes, there is colored print on the metal where it once was impressed. But it's not gaudy. Cocking is smooth and no twang was detected when shot.

First 5... I didn't realize how much strength I have lost due to medical issues (I could barely cock it)... As is this rifle is too much for me... I'm perplexed... Should I PG3 it, or trade it for more CO2 pistols? I'm tired of rabbit holes...

HW50 is a beautiful piece of kit, looks great and feels great. Even though I have only shot it 5 times, the shot cycle is nice. No dieseling, no smoke.

BTW, I got it from one of the forum sponsors (Pyramid)... Shipping was fast and free. No complaints there.

  I also have one,it is a moderate to cock springer,not easy,not hard.

You like yours but for the hard cocking effort,I would be thinking about putting a weaker spring in it=tune it down to say 12-10lbs power level.the kit is about $70 or so dollars plus the work....

Now the better option if you were getting a first time springer was to get a R7 or the hw30...but you didn't ask.

So with your medical problem,I would think a nice cheaper PCP would be the way to go,but then would you have a problem using a hand pump?I f so then PCP use gets $$$$$.

I have some great Crossman CO2 pistols...another Great option is the RWS 850 also called the Hammerli 850 it uses a 90-88 gram co2 tanks and gets a lot of shots from one.

Fact is the 850 is a great easy to use rifle that is also very accurate and costs around $300....I think it is hard to beat for what you seem to need...it is not heavy, but is rather large.

They are pretty stout to cock overall due to the lost leverage of the double jointed cocking lever.

A Vortek kit will make cocking it worse, or the same, but certainly won't lessen the effort.

Jim from Air Rifle Headquarters offers an "indoor plinkers kit" that will reduce cocking effort, and of course power.

It may very well be the best shooting gun Weihrauch currently makes, but the cocking effort is the fly in the ointment.

Now a 50S is a great rifle with a solid following.  But I had a weird thing for airguns enumerated with "35".  I had an Anschutz 335 (again, with a sporter spring JM had for me).  A Diana 35 and of course the HW 35.  Should have kept them all but did keep the HW.

Yes, the new ones are a bit more costly than, say, an HW50S.  But, you get a nice looong barrel to make that shooting session that much more comfortable.  A walnut stock and sling swivels.  And a barrel latch which, some people like 'em, some don't.  I don't mind them as the 335 would show.

Maybe check out the HW35 if you can find one used.  They're well suited to similar shooting as a stock 50S.

Sorry to hear that. As said, the HW50 is one of HW's better shooting break barrels but a new one is on the stiff side to cock out of the box. Part of that is because the factory tightens the barrel pivot too tight but some of it is also due to the rivet in the 2-piece cocking lever being set too tight. And the chisel lockup on the barrel side can be a bit stiff as well, making breaking the barrel open tiring after a few shots.

Well, I guess you have a couple of options from here. You could return the HW50 for a refund and wait for them to get some more R7s in or, you could get the JM Indoor Plinker's Kit that Limbshaker mentioned and put that in it.

https://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251488/1159287.htm

I agree with him on the Vortek kit, it won't make cocking the gun any easier and may even add to the effort required. JM states that his Plinker's Kit will reduce the power to around target rifle velocity which in turn means easier cocking. So that would probably mean that it would put out around the same power, or slightly less, as an HW30/R7 but in a little bigger package. Which way you decide to go would depend on whether or not you feel up to installing the kit yourself because I would guess after your go with trying to get your R7 tuned you don't really want to send another one off.

I have to Agree with Harv, The HW 35 has barrel latch which makes it easy to open and cock ! Heavier and longer than the HW 50 S but so much easier to cock ! Lets not forget Walnut Stock and sling ready. ! have sold 3 HW 50 S .22 and 1 in .177 All were Great Shooters but after finally after 40 years bought my first HW35 E.22 from AOA and mounted a Mendoza Aperture (peeps) and Just Love It ! My BSA SS Custom Export UK version .177 is much easier to cock and smooth shooter like a Tuned Gun right out of box (780-820) fps bought this 20 years ago from Air gun Express for $135.00 and was NIB and has only 1 manual safety, but nobody wanted to buy it because of Low Power ! I sold all my US models of the BSA SS with 2 safeties and very over powered with a lot of recoil and very loud report !

Hindsight is 20/20... I will return it and wait for an R7. It will be nice to have one I can shoot with open sights (when my eyes are working) as my R7 doesn't have a front sight.

You already have the 50S, why not keep it, and tune it down a little for easier cocking?

You will have the more reliable lockup of the wedge plunger breech on the 50S, without much extra weight over the 30.

Then sell whichever you like the least.

Sorry, I really have nothing to add here, except advice to avoid the sunk cost fallacy.

I would do that but even though it is relatively lightweight, it's a bear for me... I didn't realize or was in denial about how weak I am, I use to be strong, it has not sank in fully that I have limitations. Anyway, I can shoot a R7 and I would like one with open sights. It is what I should have ordered in the first place.

Perhaps you can put the end of the butt plate in a bench top hole and use both arms to cock it. My workbench has dog holes that are 3/4" dia and it hold the butt securely when I cock break barrels.

The older I get, the stronger I was and the faster my truck and computer go. I've been able to skip more and more PC upgrades.

A Diana 24 is nice, too, and they do come up on the classifieds and GunBroker.

I concur. The Diana 24 is a REALLY nice rifle. (I've owned a few.) Similar power and shooting behavior to the much-praised R7, but with IMHO slightly better handling and ergonomics. If, (and that's a big IF,) you can find one, the Diana 24 is a lifetime keeper rifle.

The Beeman R7/hw30s does cock easier. But I have to say here that my new hw35 isn't much if any easier than my HW50s.

I know this is a air rifle board but.......check out the CZ 457 scout bolt action .22 shooting Aguila super colibri ammo. No cocking and basically a powder air rifle. Ultra quiet and loads of fun but costly. Same power as a R1 with .22 cal pellets.

A muzzle brake makes the cocking easier by a lot. I'm disable and in a wheelchair so the strength issue is a daily one with me too. Good luck!

Thanks Bill, I will just stick with R7's, had my share of powder burners, CZ's are nice.

The 24 stroke is a little shorter than the Diana 27. At over 600 fps with most pellets, the Diana 27 is closer to the R7/HW30 performance. Its very easy to cock.

Nix the CZ457 and subsonics. For one thing, it isn't an air rifle. Unless you live on a farm, etc, you'll be shooting a firearm and those are MUCH more heavily restricted. For another, if you think pellets are getting expensive and hard to find.....
