Crosman Model 138
Crosman Model 138

Did you ever have a project/gun that never seems to end?  One where you don’t DARE do the math?

Crosman 1389 backpacker, small $.  Alchemy Air Werks piston and valve, medium $.  Alchemy Air Werks walnut stock and pump handle, stupid $.  Brass breach from same, stupid $.  Roller trigger from same, medium $.  26” barrel from Crosman, reasonable $.  Anschutz match sight from classifieds, big $.  Front sight from Daisy, reasonable $.  Clear front sight inserts from Champions Choice, big $.

If I ever added this one up, it would break my heart.  So I won’t.  And I’ll keep shooting what is probably the most accurate short-range multi-pump gun I’ve ever owned.

It sounds like a fun shooter, in spite of the price.  As I'm sure you know, sometimes you just can't put a price on something like that, and the justification is the unbeatable enjoyment factor, that keeps on giving.

Just one thing. The stock looks nice, but, who stole your butt pad?

If you wanted to keep it cheap and simple, since that's not how it's been so far, you could just get a piece of 1/8" neoprene sheeting, and use contact cement or your adhesive of choice to attach it. Just put a little Armor-All or equivalent on the exposed end and sides of the finished product, after it's glued in place.

In fact, I know someone who has some of that spare sheeting laying around. If you want to go that route, although it's not the typical and most picturesque way it's usually done, he'd probably just send you a piece. You can't beat the price. And, I think he told me he has your address.

If you're interested, what are the length and width dimensions of the end of the buttstock? Please include the fact that the length of the sheet for the butt pad will be greater than the simple or straight height, because of the concave curve I'm seeing. Even if you use it as a temporary measure, and remove it later, it would protect that nice piece of wood in the meantime.

You can get back to me about it when you get the chance, if it appeals to you.

Really nice build. I feel it suits that model well too. I had a 2240 I got carried away with. Unfortunately though every gun is a project for me. Not sure I could “shoot for fun”. Every shot is “an experiment” lol. Makes me remember the saying “only interesting gun is an “inaccurate” one”.

@ekmeister Ed, the butt pad is cowhide, suede side out.  Nice and grippy on the shoulder.  The cheekpiece is EVA, covered in leather.

I have one, but it's not about money. I have hundreds of hours in it, and over 4,000 pellets through it, and still can't get a tune on it.

@jiminpgh

Ha, I've got it now. It was invisible to me. I've never seen one, or heard of one made out of cowhide before.

Don't do the math...esp. not where my wife can see it....would totally justfiy here shoe/purse collection.
To be fair...it's only "fun" when you start with a "cheap gun".

But I can look in her eye and say,"I paid $80 for one rifle and $100 for the other " and still pass a lie detector.

All hobbies/pastimes are God's way of telling you that you got too much money.

Only time I had a one-off stock made for an airgun….and I put it on an $80 rifle.  QB78.
