I'm working on a air shotgun now. It should be done a week. Modifying a MOD 130S Vortex QE Breakbarrel it is done it will be a smooth bore 7.874 shotgun. Here's some of the ammo. A paper casing. Holding 47.3 grains of shot The casing weight is 1.7
My concept is from the civil war. Buck and ball loads. But has been modified I also use it in my 28 ga Muzzleloader shotgun, the sabots are larger and use heavier gauge paper casing.
The cartridge is a thin piece of tubing made to 7.874 there is a wad in the breach end. The case is cut in ten places around the top for crimping. They are filled with shot. Then they are crimped and a small drop of dopp wax keeps the crimp closed.
When the gun is fired it compresses the wad splitting the paper casing and opens the crimp. The barrel is slightly choked further opening the casing as it leaves the barrel
I had made some sabots in the 7.62 pellet size they shoot well in the rifled barrel of my MOD 130S Vortex QE and have a good spread up to about 36 or so feet more than that it will probably be ineffective.
Purchased another MOD 130S Vortex QE to modify. My other is broke in and it's very fun to shoot.
I will be updating all of you soon on the progress, testing etc of my project shotgun.
Very interesting and I will be watching. Oh and could you a .30 pellet next to the cartridges for a comparison and what size shot? Any crono #,s
Here are the pictures. I'm using 6 shot. But will be experimenting with other shot. Will test it with crono
Looks like a recipe for cups stuck in the barrel with both ends blow'd out, but I don't have a better idea to offer.
I didn't know there was a .30 barrel, wonder if it cane get slapped on a 135?
Finally, the forum chatter is that .22 comes out ahead of .25, doesn't .30 make this gun a dog?
The wad in the cup is firmly glued in place with 330 epoxy resin. It has a strength of 17,500 psi. Pretty sure everything will be pushed out of the barrel.
My other .30 is great for hunting at short ranges 50 yard or less. Hits real hard.
Unless used as composite, glues are only as strong as what they're gluing together.
Any chance you've looked up what the smallest size of legit cup is?
Anyway, just thinking aloud, pretty interesting stuff you have here.
You need some tom turkey targets... yeah...
They actually shot well. I made some for my rifled .30 that's what gave me the idea. And watching this awhile back

The 125, 135 and the
MOD 130S QE are basically the same platform. But you would probably have some sort of milling to do to make a barrel fit on the 135
That is so cool and I hope it all comes together for you.
looks good"
Here are some pictures of the shot patterns. I'm not totally happy with the way my first sabots are working and have a couple of ideas to make them better. I will be making some new prototypes and testing them using a lighter wad material and another crimping style. I have 25 more of the first batch of sabots to test also.
