in my basement at 50'. My iron sights are:
1.) conventional rear notch with globe front sight, tapered point front post insert. Diana 340 gas ram
2.)fiber optic rear and front. Diana 34P
3.)Rear Williams peep with adjustable iris, front sight globe with conventional front sight rectangle, not tapered to a point. Diana 52
4.) Rear peep and front circle from a 10 meter rifle. Feinverkbaugh
I can't pick a favorite. I just enjoy ALL of them. Soon I'm going to try out a dot, reflex or illuminated reticle. I've only done a little research and a 1 M.O.A dot is probably best for precision shooting. They sure are pricey.
So do you guys have a iron sight preference?
It's hard to say I have a favorite since my nearsightedness/age pretty much keeps me from utizing open sights. I HAVE tried several set-ups, though, so I'll comment.
For field use at further distances, my better success came with the first 3, as I think you can imagine. But, my BEST success came with using a pointed insert on the front sight and the Williams rear sight, since the point gives you a much more precise, well, point to place on the target (as opposed to a square top where you sort of have to imagine the midpoint of the insert.
I do have a suggestion you might want to try for your 3.) without damaging anything.
Remove the insert, and place 2 pieces of masking tape slightly apart, running top to bottom to define a line in the center. Then use some Wite-Out on the area between the lines to give you a 'skinny' aim point. I got good success that way. And, if you don't like it it's easily removed with a dab if paint thinner.
Some would say optic green or orange paint might be a better choice, but that's up to you. The white was good.
(Merely a silly note: spell checker on my phone changed Wite-Out to Wife-Out. I hate spell checker, but I think a guy could make a good living with a dab-on product like that-lol).
