Early HW77 front sights are grooved to accept a hood, similar to early HW30/R7, R25, maybe R9, etc. The blued steel hood is often missing. Has anyone ever seen a HW77 (1983 timeframe) with a hood in place?

No, never thought of it like that. I was under the impression that you remove the 77 front sight all together and slde the traditional globe sight in place?

You can't remove the front sight from the Mk1 in the picture. Not removable

I have an HW77K MK2, manufactured 1985-1991 according to the serial number 1145xxx.

My front sight is hooded with blade inserts... not sure if it is original or not, since I bought the rifle from estate sale many years ago.

It came with the front sight and a merit disc aperture sight.

I have one too (a Mk1) and my hood is missing . I can't remember seeing one with the hood. They get lost. Using a scope usually means take it off. These guns area bout 40 years old now. I have several spares of the Mk1 sight latch/detent assemblies (anybody need 1?) but no hoods.
