Anyone ever try and remove or at least lesson the spring twang on a 124? Not a fan of using tar, and recently while replacing the seal I applied some ARH Moly grease on the spring and there was still some twang. I had a Russ Best-tuned R9 that had no twang and just a low "thump". Trying to duplicate this. Want to keep the velocity as high as possible, too. Just seeing what my options are.

ARH currently has 3 spring or spring kit options for your rifle, and based on my past experience with using his previous 124 springs and kits, every one of them will almost certainly take care of the twang situation for you. They fit the built-in rear guide of the rifle much better than the factory spring does--that's what does the trick. His springs are almost-always also easier to install than the factory spring, and usually provide more velocity, too.
Since I've never used any of his current springs or kits for the rifle, others may choose to add their comments about those, but I trust things I just described are pretty-much the same.
You'll find some very-handy instructions regarding those 3 items above when you open their links. Some information regarding velocity is to be had there, too.
I tend to like tar on the OD of a mainspring, but moly will work. Just in case it crosses your mind, though, never mix JM's moly paste with his spring tar--you'll get a soupy mess!

+1 for ARH. I’ve used two of their pro-mac kits and they are excellent. That being said, I would order the twister spring and a seal. I’ve heard great things about the twister and it’s built to do exactly what you seek to do.

Check Maccari's site, ARH, as Ed mentioned. Jim has a spring called the twister which he made to fit the rear guide of fwb 124/27's tight. Here's some of what he said about it;
"New- FWB 124-127 "Twister" Spring
I tried to introduce this about 20 years prior but the Internet wasn't ready for the concept.
Customers complained because the spring was super tight on their spring guide and back then to them it was the wrong spring.
Fast forward today and most now know or at least they can be directed on why this is a great FWB spring.
How to use this spring.
We have preset this spring for you to shorten it for an easier install.
Next take a file or Dremel tool and dress the inside of one end of the spring ID. that has the spur in the inside. That is where the wire winds tighter on the inside of the spring at the end of the shaved coil. Just carefully grind or file just the tip of the spur. Should take less than a half a minute. You are taking off the point only- maybe 10 thousands of an inch- just dressing it up and taking the point off of the wire. Don't make a mess and hog out the spring.
The spur end will be the biggest ID end of the spring so you will want to put this on the guide. The guide should have our moly paste on it and the spring will be twisted on which will yield much smoothness. And when you cock the gun the spring ID expands a bit anyway.
A very skilled airgun worker would also want to chamfer the OD of the spring guide as FWB didn't. No instructions will be given on this as you should be skilled before you attempt this although it isn't brain surgery."

get a Maccari twister kit and use tar on spring . The spring is faster than factory so after lube and light tar it is still faster than factory and damn close to a best tune . Both of mine are quiet and smooth . And both got more accurate after tune by me with Maccari stuff . Use some moly on trigger !!! Use Maccari piston seal and size it on a drill press . I had to learn to do this the hard way. Took it apart many times . If you need help with any of this PM me. Or text you have my number

Russ may be doing some tuning work again. I say it that way because I THINK he took a little breather for awhile, but that's not to say he's not taking any more business. And please don't take that as gospel, because it wouldn't be fair for me to speak for the man either way. For that matter, I'm tuning again too after being gone a few years. It's not exactly rocket science, although some of the small details do make a nice difference. I've already finished a few. I've tuned 124's and lots of others. Hi Ed, I've been away from the scene for quite some time and haven't seen Russ post so I was kind of wondering if he was doing well. He always posted like a kind gentleman. I do recall him being waist deep in tuning work back then.
I have read your post and posts from others regarding your work for many years and they have been nothing short of top notch. I wouldn't think twice about sending a gun to you sir if I were to go that route....and I just might. I know what you mean about the summation of the "little" things making a good tune into a great tune. I'm quite capable of doing drop in kits; I wish I understood all the little things however.

I apologize for using your post. Toward your original post, I'm am no fan of tar myself. For my personal tastes the tradeoff has never been worth using it on springs -in my experience.
Went full Feinwerktard on my 124D, enlisting the help of a retired machinist pard to CNC mill some divots in the piston skirt @ 120 degrees to install three 13% PTFE Delrin buttons in addition to new ARH guts. Have James' moly and tar but opted for Krytox GPL 205 for lube on piston and spring. Totally twangless and I have a target from when she stacked 3 pokes in one ragged hole at 50 paces. She's a peach!

I like to post tips when I can, but not so much that I would never get another tuning job. I know some people are going to tune their own guns, though, so I share a little. I couldn't tune them all anyway. I've helped some folks by a private email on a few occasions. I just have to keep that to a minimum, or I wouldn't get any tuning work done. But, I was DIY guy myself once, so I know what it's like to be stuck.
In fact, I sort of owe a big favor to a few guys who helped ME in years past. One used to be at the old Beeman. The other is still in business elsewhere, so I won't even hint at his name so he doesn't get barraged with DIY help calls--he'd probably want to get someone to kill me--lol! But, I buy some of the products he sells at his business place occasionally, as a small way of saying thanks.
