Hi there. Just joined so forgive me if I'm not up to snuff with the protocol here. I have just recently acquired a Crosman #70 Pellgun. From the research I have briefly done, it looks to be an early model, but before I get ahead of myself, the serial number is 573005.  Now I have seen that these were made from 74-80, but that serial number looks like it was made in May of 1973, and was the 5th one off the line. Does that make sense or am I out to lunch? Any help would be appreciated!

Serial Number

Also, does anyone know where I might find part# 70-646? See PDF.

Thanks for the reply. That was the site where I was able to come up with that assessment too. That would mean that it was the 5th one ever made, and that would be pretty cool for sure. Appreciate your help!

JG needs to update that page, because pre 1950 Crosman guns do have serial numbers all the way back to the Model Ones. The only ones I've not found serial numbers on are some of the "Premier" embossed Montgomery Wards guns and the 1949-50 wrinkle paint 101's.

I think the OP's Model 70 has a pre-July 1975 non-dated serial number according to that link. For reference my Model 70 is 00006371

2732

Hello and welcome.  The part your looking for is on JGAirguns site, if you didn't see it below is a link.

Enjoy your model 70. Is yours a rifled or smoothbore barrel?

Sorry, I didn't realize it was sold out.

All good. I did find that one previously, but I appreciate you sending it to me!

It is rifled.

Update on the SIN. After cleaning, there was another number so the serial number is actually 576. Still pretty young in the lineup, but not as cool as #5. 😉

All done with the teardown and rebuild. Here are some pics if y'all are interested. I have MANY more (of course), so if there is something of interest or specific you would like to see, let me know.

Nice looking Model 70, I asked about the barrel because I believe that some (if not most) of them were made with smoothbores. I've owned 3 of them over the years and 2 were smoothbores, several years ago when I bought my first one I heard that the Boy Scout versions were the ones that had the rifled barrels (but I'm not sure about that). I've never seen any of the Boy Scout models so maybe the only difference was the rifled barrel and a specially marked box? I don't know if any members on here would have any more data on the Boy Scout models, if so would you please chime in?

I have a Daisy 717 pistol that's in a box marked "American Police Academy Special" and the only difference between it and a standard 717 is a sticker or disc in a recess in the grip panel over the grip screw that says those words. Unfortunately mine is missing the sticker or disc, but the recess is in the grip so I know it's the original grip panel.

Good luck with your search for the rear sight.

PS: You might just put a good scope on your model 70 (the original sights weren't that great) and get the most out of any accuracy that it has. Just a thought.

Thanks so much for the info! Appreciate your input. That 717 sounds pretty cool too.

I'd like to get the rear site still as it is the only original piece that seems to be missing from this example. I have the left/right adjustment still, but the actual site piece is what is missing. The drawing I found shows it all as 1 piece, so hopefully something will come available out there.

Again, thanks, and have a great week!

Let me throw something interesting out there:

For a while, during the 80's, Crosman established some sort of relationship with a Spanish company that made "clones" to their models, and maybe made parts for Crosman.

The brand was called "Podium" and they made identical models, this is a short story (Written in Spanish, but the pictures illustrate well the idea):

https://armasantiguasdeaire.blogspot.com/p/sportil.html

As you can see the Podium 286 was identical to the Crosman 70.

And Podium used castings made by Crosman in their model 284 that was the clone to the BB Matic/1600

The 286 was distributed in Europe under the UMAREX brand:

I have one and they are very interesting, mine is powered up (650's fps with 8½ grs. pellets) and uses the normal Crosman powerlets.
Barrel is rifled and better than tin can accurate within the 25 yards range. Very light, but too big for an 8 year old.

This is compared to my D54:

And this is compared to my D430L:

CIMG4919

With a small 7/8"scope it weighs in at 5# 11oz:

CIMG4920

And it shoots reasonably well:

Here she is from both sides:

A closeup of the scope:

Mounted low enough to clear the bolt:

Hope you enjoyed the "throw from the left field".

Keep well and shoot straight!
