I have one from when I was a young teen. Nice rifle. Hard to scope but I suppose it could be done. I hot rodded the valve. Radiused the port and turned the stem seal to make it conical, thus lightening it. Installed ice maker tubing transfer port. I can get 700 fps with RWS Hobby pellets for about 25-30 shots in warm weather. Added a recoil pad to lengthen LOP. Fun gun that can go through pellets. Shoots Crosman wadciutters at 675 fps or so. Not bad for a repeater.
first pellet gun i ever owned but the Sears marked one it was Christmas of 1959
have no idea what pellets i use but they will jam from time to time if you are in a hurry which all kids were
there are 2 variants and they are one of the better products that Crosman made
The one coming my way is a first variant,(safety through the stock) and is said to look pretty good.
My bud found it at a yard sale. Probably need a reseal.
Sears always wanted the little extras from Crosman. 😎
Thanks!
@matchstickshooter wadciutters feed flawlessly if the shuttle isn't bunged up. 2nd varient had a much better trigger but 1st is serviceable.
Daisy Wads in .22 I have(came in a trade) but never came across any more.
fun to experiment. By the way, here's a question I haven't seen,
can a pellet be fired singley, without the mag?
Thanks!

I had one when I was a kid, it was my next upgrade from my Slavia 618 springer, it functioned near flawlessly.
My only complaint as a frequently destitute kid was that by the time I loaded up the required 2 CO2 carts and pellets it cost almost as much to shoot as a 22 short rimfire, which my mom wouldn't let me get till I was older.
I had to abandon it after I dropped it in the sand and semi disassembled it to get out the grit. After that instead of it firing with a normal report it let out a flatulant braaap sound every time I fired it. I even sent it back to Crosman for repair and it came back weeks later with the same malfunction. Sad.
The 400 is basically a repeating version of the legendary model 160 single-shot rifle. Or...think of it as the long-gun equivalent of the equally legendary model 600 pistol. To be honest I've never quite understood why it's not more in demand as a collectible!
Man that's a shame. And you probably don't have it anymore.
I had a 618 for a short time. That too was a neat little gun.
I'm certainly looking forward to getting it!
All I have is a discription, haven't seen it yet.

No, I don't even remember where it ended up, but I did get another one around 15 years ago, it shot fine.I'm a serial buyer/seller and traded it off because it was a little too loud for covert back porch shooting.
I probably have an unused aftermarket magazine tube in my stuff somewhere if anyone needs one.

I may need it! lol think this one is coming with one but not sure yet.
Finally nailed down a time and place. Get to pick up the 400 on Friday! WooHoo! 😎
@matchstickshooter may as well mod the valve a bit. At least use 1/4 ice maker tubing for the transfer port. Requires a short countersink in the barrel and exhaust port of the valve. Clean the rust off as best you can with #0000 steel woll and oil it up. You'd need to strip and reblue to make it pristine and it's not worth it.
Thought of ice maker tubing, but now have a seal kit coming that includes everthing.
Mod it? I just hope to get it working. Still waiting on the Postal Service for another needed part.
@matchstickshooter . A small piece of ice maker tubing is all you need, like a half inch or less. Pick up 25 fps for next to nothing.
I do have tubing, and have done it before. First I'd like to clean it up good and get it working.
I found I should be able to load it without a mag... hold it pointed down,
open the bolt, drop the pellet in where the mag would go and close the bolt.
Still watching the mail...
Today a magazine came in (thanks MoleEye!) and the seal kit I had to order.
Got it up and shooting now, blasted a bean can with it. Plenty of power! 😎 😎
Cool!
I have one like that too. And 1 or two Second variant. There's a real nice Sears Variant 2 hiding around here.
i keep saying "one of these days" ya know. Does everybody with "the disease" have uncounted Crosman co2?
Still tinkering. Someone pointed out to me this has a loaded chamber indicator I did not know about.
No mention in my manual.
Took it apart, cleaned rust, made a new seal for it.
I too am a big fan of the 400. At one time I owned five of them because I just kept finding nicer and nicer-looking guns. Still have three; one first variant and two later. The only problem with a 400 is they are difficult to put down once you start shooting. And since repeaters, by their design, are less efficient than a single shot 400's are CO2 munching machines! I learned to never bring out a 400 unless I grabbed 4 CO2 cartridges at the same time.
Compared to the 600 pistola, which is also a gas hog, the real beauty of the 400 is its carefree attitude toward pellets, as long as it is a wadcutter they will cycle just fine.
Mine is fussy with the wad cutters I have (Daisy, and gamo) but it may be the spring in the mag.
Crosman Ultra Mags are a bit easier.
I find if I only load 5 the action works easier than loading 10. That and I still haven't completely solved my stem leak .
Will be getting another from Precision Pellet.
Here's another question or two... Does the "safety click bushing" on the left side of the stock work itself out on you?
Every once in a while I see it sticking out a bit, and give it a rap to put it back in.
what holds it in? schematic shows a spring and 2 safety balls...sure don't want to lose them.
Friction I believe. Put a cpl toothpicks in and tap it in with a socket over it.
Today I got a new part for my valve, from Precision Pellet, and the 400 no longer hisses! The stem wasn't sealing.
It shoots hard,....and loud! lol.

As it turned out, it did continue to act up! When first inserting a co2 cart, it would go off like a full auto for the first few shots. Then it would calm down, but as the pressure went down it would start to hiss. I could hear it when I opened the chamber. It would stop when i cocked it.
It sat in the closet for a while.
Figured out what I would try... put a bit stiffer spring in the valve, and I took a few thousnds of an inch off the end of the step where the hammer hits, with a file.
Success!! No more BRRAAPPP! when I pull the trigger,at the beginning of a cart, and no more hiss!!
Back when I was about 13, my grandad got me a 400. I shot it a lot that summer. Winter comes and I'm at his house and there are 4 to 5 rabbits in the back yard at night. I take the gun and slowly stalk and then lie down for a shot. Waiting, waiting, waiting and finally a shot. Fooop! What was that? Rabbits run off so I stalk again. Get within 20 yards and foop! Managed a head shot but it barely penetrated the skull. Was then I discovered CO2 was temp sensitive! At least I got the rabbit. Was a Daisy 880 after that, then a Benjamin 347. Took many rabbits and squirrels with the Benji.
i would race to see how fast i could dump out the shots of course it was 1960 and i was ten
and use co2 they did
of course in those days Sear catalog was a kids wish book but as a kid get a new Sears catalog was one hell of a thrill
sold my sears 400 after i got a tube fed .22LR and for some reason i remember the price sold 27.00 and that was say 61 years ago
i never took it outside to shoot i had a basement that was 60-70 ft long and yes that is right 15 foot ceilings the house was huge and sat on 100ft of waterfront on Lake Washington
sorry for the details it brought back memories for an old man
happy holidays

Bill and Mike,

Nice thread! One of my good friends was recently talking about an old CO2 Crossman he had back in the 60s that had 2 CO2 cartridges, was a bolt action with a tubular horizontal spring magazine, and was a .22 cal. My guess is it was one of these nice model 400s (not sure if it was a 1st variant with the through bolt safety or the second variant with the cast trigger...). He said it was his first gun he purchased at the age of 12 or so and he soon after cleared out the neighborhood squirrel population! I was looking to find him one but they have been pretty hard to come by (other than the "for parts" ones ebay has (lots of patina!)) If anyone knows someone that has one available, I would be more than interested!
Thanks again for sharing and Happy Holidays to you all as well!
