A BSA Meteor in .22 has come across my bench.
Serial number is TD 12612. Anyone know which MK number that is? I think its an MK3.
I need seals for sure and possibly other parts, but I need to verify the MK version so I get the right items.
Also is Chambers the best source for BSA springer parts? I see that Maccari has spring for the Meteor, but I don't see any seals listed. JGAirguns has parts for several models.
Have not taken it fully apart yet, so I don't know which piston assembly it has.
this will get you what you want

there is
meteor 1
meteor 2 early and late
meteor 3
and so on

This will give you years of mfg based on the letter prefix. Based on the above photos, my .177 Meteor appears to be a Mark 2, second model, but I'll be damned if I can find a serial number on it anywhere.
I rebuilt mine with a Maccari spring and a new breach seal and piston head from www.customairseals.com They are in Australia, but shipping was reasonable and fast. I sourced the correct rear sight and front sight hood from Chambers.
Meteors are nice guns when done up right.

Howdy Jim!
My serial number was on the lefthand tine of the 'fork' where the cocking lever attaches to the barrel:
Hope that helps.
here is the serial numbers with dates and model now you have to figure out does the barrel go with the tube as it came from the factory

but it looks like mk1 guts

And John Knibbs' database says MkII
My .177 Meteor was purchased at an airgun show for $12 as a total basket case; completely seized and actual mold on the stock. I did a complete refurb and refinish, using parts I sourced from John Knibs (sights), Jim Maccari (spring), and www.customairseals (piston head and breach seal). The hardest part was removing the gunk in the compression tube that was left from the completely deteriorated piston head. The customairseals replacement is a nylon piston head with an o-ring seal, and a polymer buffer. It keyholes into the piston. Its now a healthy shooter at around 600 fps with 8.2 gr Meisters, and a truly delightful shot cycle. The factory painted finish on the metal had a few scars, which I touched up with cold blue. The stock looks fantastic after a full sanding, analine dye, and linseed oil finish.
FWIW, I've been all over this gun and couldn't find a serial # anywhere. Seems to be a second model Mark 2.
This is my loaner gun. When I tell someone I'm into air guns and they express some interest, I give them this gun and a tin of Walmart CPHP pellets and let them have it for a weekend.
Meteor all done!
With supplies from Chambers I got the Meteor II (Super MK) repaired. Rather than upgrading the piston head to an o-ring, I simply fitted and oiled up a new leather seal and put it in the stack with washers and buffer.
The new spring is almost two inches longer than the original. Had to make up a little tool to get the spring and guide in far enough for the cross pin. Cross pin has to slide THROUGH the tool while under compression. BTW: The cross pin is contoured to fit the back of the spring guide on this model! You cannot just press the spring in to take off the pressure. You have to push it in much further than you normally would. Don't just start hammering on it:
(pic from BBPelleteer article)
The trigger on this model has a grub screw to push the sear closer to the edge. With some testing and proper lube I have a consistent 1# break. VERY crisp. This is a single stage trigger, and took some getting used to since every other airgun here have two stage triggers.
Shooting RWS Meisters into a ragged hole at 50', but only running 525fps. I think this will increase as the seals wear in. Maybe not, as the Meteor was never meant to be a magnum springer.
The rifle is so well behaved now that I am thinking of making up a brass top hat and delrin spring guide for it. The brass would add a bit more weight and energy to the piston and maybe eke out a bit more power.
Anyone have advice for how long to make the spring guide? Is there any benefit to making it longer or shorter than the factory guide?
Neat info on Meteors:

Well I don't see the lever or the tap loading... looks like a hinge though.
- I now have look at my supersport and pictures.
- I was too lazy to take a picture of my Meteor... it is almost the same pattern except it has a brass muzzle brake. It is a break barrel
Oh well now I gotta take some of the real thing.
Thanks for pointing out my error.
