I am taking a close look at the new-to-me Discovery line of scopes to mount on an HW 97, particularly the 4-16X 50. Anyone have any other suggestions I should consider? I had a UTG a while back. It was OK but bulky, heavy and homely. Trying to keep things under $300 and the "more under the better."

For springers I like my Optisan Mamba lite 4-16x44.   They are light and fairly cheap, excellent optics and a good reticle.  Turrets are basic, so not sure it'd be great for clicking FT style.    Pretty generous 44mm objective keeps it bright, under 20 ounces, quality lens covers.   Pretty cheap.

I also would consider the MTC Mamba lite 4-16x44 .   It's newer and has bigger turrets and some other nice things added, but is $400 + .

I also have a Hawke 6-24x44 which is light and fairly inexpensive.   Great to have more magnification but I feel like the Mamba has better optics and reticle.  Not a bad choice though.

Regards,

John

I would take a good look at the Tac vector line of scopes ,,,particularly the Sentinel line. For right around $200 its a great bargain scope that can be used for FT and hunting.

Hi Kdog,

Those Vector Optics scopes are really nice  looking, love the turrets.   Do you have one on a springer?  I'm always looking for good scopes that can stand up to 14 ft. lb springers and $200 is nice.   Thanks for any info.

Take a look at Nikko Stirling  4-16 scopes. They fit your criteria.

I am partial to the Weaver V16's.  Also have the mid line Clearidge and it is a fantastic scope, but has the target turrets.

Checking out all the suggested options. I am liking the Vector Marksman 4.5-18, but it may only focus to 20 meters. Can't find the specs on the Sentinels on the Vector Web site. Looking for side focus, of course.

Just to get a scope here, I went with an Athlon Talos 3-12 from Pyramyd, and figure if I really get the FT fever I can upgrade.

If you are considering FT, you need a scope that focuses down to 10 yards.  We have a couple of Hawke Airmax side focus scopes being used in our field target group.  I just bought one but haven't set it up yet.  Seems like a nice scope and the glass is very good.

Have an SWFA 10X MMQ with a 30mm tube and mil-quad reticle on my FT springers.  It's so stout you could club baby seals with it.  Worked with Hector Medina on his prototype Nautilus side wheel for same.   Flawless tracking and RTZ if not just using the windshield.

For under $100 I have Mantis 4-12x40 with sunshade.  I just mounted it on an old Diana 45 action. The clicks are positive and the picture is clear. The mildot reticle should work well for holdover. I plan to use it for target and silhouette.

For FT, the prime criteria is how accurately the scope ranges, especially between 40 and 55 yards.  That weeds out a lot of them including big name scopes.  My favorite is the Hawke Sidewinder 30 6-24X56 with the 1/2 mildot reticle.
