Old frying pans have become one of my favorite airgun targets... spray paint them white, make some bullseyes with a black magic marker, and shoot !
They hold up pretty well with the springers that I have shot at them.
This is an interesting idea for a penetration test near the limits of range. I wonder how different pellets would show up as dents?
Of course any sheet metal could be used but, the shape of these holes is really nice. Reminds me of clay behind a vest.
@gratewhitehuntr thanks for watching, I m going to use frying pan for my next test again with different pellets, I think none of my brake barrels can penetrate it with lead pellet , but next time I’m gonna used alloy pellets
Do brake barrels slow the pellet?
OK, so I'm a pedantic old codger.
Silly goose. They brake your face when it dampens the auto-close feature.
Yes, I do know 😐
@lead_badger I've only been shooting my .20 HW77K springer at an old fry pan that I have been using recently... but it only leaves some dents--not doing any penetration tests... I normally put several bullseye circles on it, scattered around on it... does make a nice "THUNKING" sound when the pellet hits, and it sticks into the ground easy !
@airmojo how do you like the .20 HW77K,
I never had a .20 cal , I always wonder how this caliber performs
Do brake barrels slow the pellet?
OK, so I'm a pedantic old codger.
Airguns come in a wide variety of powers. Same with break barrels. They don't slow the pellet.
Also, frying pans are not a standardized test medium. I doubt that you could find two the same thickness or material.
My mistake, I misinterpreted.
American BRAKE. To snap or come apart.
English BRAKE. A device used to slow or stop a vehicle or moving object.
A BREAK is obviously the gadget on a car wheel. Americans use it to slow down. The English hope the wheel doesn't.
@lead_badger The only .20 sprinter I have is my Weihrauch Hw77K...I do have a couple of older Sheridan Blue & Silver streaks... The HW77K is my favorite overall air rifle... very accurate, and easy to cock with the shorter barrel & cocking lever... it shoots about 700 fps with H&N Trophy 11.42 gr pellets... I installed a JM Air Rifle Headquarters kit in it a couple of years ago.
@airmojo great looking rifle man ! I’m gonna be visiting Arizona next month and I think Airgun of Arizona has a great inventory, hope fully I can buy one if not at least hold it and look at it for 5 min 😄
I had to try this. I found a thrift shop frying pan that looks exactly like that one. It's light weight, must be aluminum.
So. I don't have any PCP; my fastest springer is the underlever BSA Goldstar in .177. Big dents but no penetration. Crosman Premier domes of course.
Then the BS 392. At 8 pumps, still no penetration, but impressive dents and nice loud clang. And tired arms.
Now I've started to wonder. If I keep shooting will I go through eventually? Not with the 392, unless I can find someone else to pump, but maybe the BSA. Or will I run out of pellets first?
@timr thanks for watching ! I got these frying g pans from Walmart but I saw them at target too , you can buy 3 of them for $24
I finally got around to testing whether multiple shots would go through.
I was waiting for time to put 100 rounds on that frying pan. My BSA Goldstar has a 10 round magazine. It's an underlever, way over powered for the basement so it doesn't get shot much. I don't hunt much anymore. I don't remember the velocity, though I've had it on the chrono. High 700s low 800s maybe?
So I loaded up 10 rounds of Crosman Hollowpoint 7.9 gr. These are cheap and seem to be as close to the old domes as you can get now.
I didn't check the target until the 10th round but actually I think maybe round 2 or 3 went through; the target looked a little different then. 25 feet same as the OP.
The old frying pans I have and shoot at all vary in thickness, and probably the steel too... I definitely put some dents in them, but no penetration yet... I've mainly been shooting my .20 HW77K at it... it shoots the 11.42 gr H&N Field Target Trophy at about 700 fps/12.42 Ft/lbs.
Haven't tried my .22 R1TK with a JM full power kit installed... I will have to give it a try !
I bet a cast-iron skillet would hold up just fine !
May have to stop at the local Goodwill store to see what they have !
Hit a rummage and get old cast iron pans or old fire alarm bells. Louder ring and you won't dent them unless you're shooting a big bore PCP.
Love the old fire alarm bells and various others... I've made several with different size bells...
I have grown fond of the frying pans/skillets for their simplicity, and the pellets do make a good THUNKing noise... great for sighting in too !
