Acording to this, maybe we shouldn't use moly at all?

It's long, but the short version is that moly....

promotes corrosion under many circumstances

increases wear (except under very high loads)

increases friction (except under loads that break down the boundary layer of the carrier grease)

This is an extensive study , done by the US military. Pretty reliable data, you'd think..but who's seen these problems showing up in airguns lubed with moly?

This article seems to address the history of MSO2 and reports of corrosion from back in the day

ooh, good info. So it seems like more recent improvements to moly manufacture, and using  anti-corrosion carriers fixed the issue.

Did you see the mention of "burnished films" compared to bonded films?

Yeah I saw that.  I understand burnishing but I don't know much about bonded films.  I assumed it involves an industrial application process of some kind...not something that's practical in my little world of airguns.

It's not good as a bearing type lube, but on parts that would tend to cold weld, when fitted together, it prevents cold welding.

That’s bad news. I use moly on all my airguns! Maybe we can send a copy of this to a manufacturer and ask for comment?

The army tests are focused on rotational bearing loads, which can be millions of cycles.

For a springer, we're talking a few thousand cycles. Very different animal.

When mixed with a corrosion-inhibiting grease base, moly fortified lubes have done the job for springers for decades. Honda doesn't sell junk.

But if you really don't want any worries -- go Krytox.

I have some Krytox. I should start using it more. More expensive than moly. I hope they don’t find anything “wrong” with it!
