Hi all,

As an addicted HW97K tuner I'm constantly tuning / testing my 97 to get what I want from this gun , fast shot cycle max power  with accuracy  , currently running a mix of parts from  HW, vortek,, customairseals au.

Results are very good  but I'm always experimenting. My question to the 97 tuners out there is : Has anyone ever run the vortek 135 gauge spring in a 97? and if so how'd it go? I currently like the spring from the SHO kit the best, 79012829  as it gives me by far the best results (but not using the SHO kit). I emailed Tom at vortek asking if he'd tried it in a 97 and he replied "bottom half of cocking cycle stiff  " that's all I got!

so thought I'd just throw it out there , ps I run my HW97K. 177 at around 16/17 ft lbs very effectively and am not at all interested in 12 ft lbs,,Im English living in New Zealand

My full power 97k has the ARH hornet kit.  With a concave faced seal, I find that it will "Rock your world"........

Cocking is stiffer tho,

Power is great, but more importantly is the consistency over a temperature change. One of the best things you can do is make an o-ring piston seal for it. Use a thin cross section ring, not a thick one. You'll likely pick up a little speed, and a snappier shot cycle. But most importantly it will be a lot more consistent POI through all conditions. Lube the whole works with Ultimox or Krytox Teflon lubes that don't thicken and cause drag with cold temps or age.

mm sounds very interesting, is there an o-ring seal available for the 97 ? or are we talking made from scratch / one off  lathe work?

Made from scratch. Ed Canoles is the man on these. He's made lots of posts here over the years on his findings with them.

Yes Ed Canoles had outstanding post with his R - 9 O ring piston caps and modern lubes

even homemade pellet sizers, and many many great airgun shares , one  thing to remember  if  you  try the new lubes as mentioned  by Limb Shaker   you need  to  thoroughly remove  all traces of the old molly &  other type  lubes hopefully  from every crevice especially around the bottom of the air chamber. Otherwise you can get a cross contamination  and it can  ruin  the new    Krytox lube / we can thank Ed for all his findings  &  contributing post, but he is no longer here

Is he still alive ?

Just wondering... he went by "WV Ed" for many years on the old forums didn't he ?

I always enjoyed his posts and findings !

I'm pretty sure Ed was WV before NC... he moved from WV to NC.

I remember him very well from the good old days of internet airgun forums !

Glad to hear he is alive and kick'n !

You're right--'WV' before he became 'NC' for the reason you mentioned.  I talked to him on the phone something like a year ago.  He sounded good and stated no health problems to me, FWIW.

Anyone who read his many posts over the years knows he was an avowed-accomplished springer shooter, tinkerer, and contributor.  He made a couple of special 'service jigs' for me several years back, and they were totally-top-shelf quality.

But, anyway, when we spoke on that occasion he said he was expanding his horizons a little to include at least some dabbling in the world of PCP's (my paraphrase--I hope I said that right) to see what it was like.  I hope he's still doing well.

Ed is still around and active on other AG forums. Unfortunately he no longer posts here. He has his reasons and I understand and respect his decision. He's a great source of knowledge and information for us springer shooters and I consider it a loss to this forum that he no longer posts here.
