I put a Altaros reg in my Air Arms and it had a slow leak. I put it away and forgot about it. Pulled it out today after sitting maybe a year and it won't take air. It acts like the inlet air valve is stuck. Anyway, I'm going to let the pros have a look. Suggestions as to who would be appreciated.

Rick

It's this gun...

Pluric, Just by chance sense the gun is completely empty there is spring pressure on the hammer holding the valve spring open so try cocking the gun before trying to fill it to take the pressure off of the poppet spring.  Hope it works for you always has for me!  J.L

Well, I decided to tear into it and try to figure out what was going on. Pretty simple system for the inlet valve stop.

AA 1

Made sure nothing was stuck and put it back together. No change it would not take air. Thought maybe the fill tank was too low so I tried a topped off 4500 tank. Nope. Pulled the stop valve out and the manometer and could get air to go through the gun. Put the manometer back in and left the stop valve out. Filled right up.

Little head scratching in that the gun had not been touched and used to fill fine. I figured the stopper valve spring must be too strong. As far as I know it's the stock spring. Should only be there to keep some pressure on the stopper valve from dropping if the air tube ever got really low. So to the spring drawer to find  a weaker spring.

My dad never threw anything metal away. I teased the shit out of him and now I can't thank him enough. Seems I can always find the oddest thing in one of his drawers.

AA 2

Didn't see a compression spring I liked so I took a tension spring and stretched it a little. The pinch test made it feel weaker than the stock spring. Put it in and it worked perfect. Filled right up. Phew. Now to test it out.

AA 3

Tried several different weight pellets on the heavy side to slow it down. Seemed to like the 8.44 at around 1000 fps more than the 10 and 13gr in the 800's.

AA

I actually got a couple better groups after this test page.

AA 4

I'll see if it loses air over night. Fingers crossed.

I was talking about the valve that opens to let air into the transfer port Sorry if I confused you !!  If you hear air escaping when trying to fill the rifle when empty cock the hammer and that will take pressure off of the valve spring allowing the valve to be closed by the air pressure.  hope this works for you !!  sorry for the mix up!!  J.L.

Thank you! I did try to cock and dry fire it a few times. Just to make sure the air was completely out. I didn't think of the transfer port air. I still think it's odd the fill stop spring was an issue. Once I put the lighter pressure spring in it seems fine.

The other thing I forgot to mention was I remembered it being a bear to cock. It put a damper on shooting sessions. Felt like sand was in the mechanism. Broke out the Ballistol and gave it a few shots. 100% improvement! Still a strong pull back but so smooth now. Must have got some on the trigger linkage because it went from a nice trigger to a REALLY nice trigger. 🙂

Every tool box should have a can. My new Impact didn't cock as well as I thought it should, Ballistol to the rescue. Super smooth now. I asked my son how his Impact cocking was and he was quite happy with it. Asked if he minded me giving it a little lube and he said "Go ahead". Gave it a light film and he was like "Oh shit! That's nice!" Another convert.

Something else Ballistol is good for is the wood stock. I mixed it with Tung oil and got a really nice dark finish on my TM1000 walnut stock. Kept putting it on until I got the color I wanted. Then I put Harris furniture polish on it and it really looks good. I use the Ballistol on the metal too.
